Cassava Project
A virus infecting 80% of the cassava crop with rot had greatly exacerbated the 2017 famine. Access to clean seed/cuttings (disease-free, pest resistant, high yielding varieties) is essential for the women farmers, as well as fair markets for produce. An independent cassava consultant was engaged to provide training on cassava growing and to help move the farmers from subsistence practices to undertaking cassava production as a business. The first highly successful harvest was gathered in the spring of 2019. Cuttings for replanting are now available from this harvest, allowing many more farmers to join in the project. 4GROW is working to upgrade practices of post-harvest handling and storage of the cassava crops, and planning a milling facility for our farmers with technology for enhancing the product with vitamin fortification.
In 2014, a one-week seminar was presented by Organics 4 Orphans, a Canadian NGO, to train the GROW women in Biointensive Gardening. 12 women and 5 men in the Tilling community were trained in biointensive farming and use of natural medicine alternatives, and each participant received a certificate and the gift of a household solar lamp.
