Phoebe is a special two year old Ugandan girl whom we first met in February, 2019.
She presented to our clinic, malnourished, anemic, with a colostomy draining feces down her abdomen.
This was a result of surgery to relieve a rectal obstruction present at birth,
The Brigade arranged to have the colostomy reversed in a local hospital. During surgical preparation Phoebe developed respiratory distress.
Surgery was cancelled and further investigation revealed the presence of a congenital heart condition called Tetrology of Fallot.
Phoebe now requires major cardiac surgery. This will cost substantially more than her rectal operation. Without this she will die in the next few years.
The Peterborough Medical Brigade is committed to helping this child receive her surgeries.
WE HAVE REACHED THAT GOAL.!!! THANKS TO YOUR GENEROUS DONATIONS! THE TWELVE THOUSAND DOLLAR TARGET HAS BEEN REACHED.
With the help of 4GROW and GROW (Grace for Rural Orphans and Widows) Phoebe will be able to have her corrective surgery in the next few months.
The generosity of our Canadian donors has truly amazed us. Truly we are all united in our compassion and care for those that are less fortunate.
We will keep everyone informed as to her progress.
Phoebe Project
I’m 24 years old and have has finished my nursing certificate. I love my work, helping and taking care of the sick. I’m very grateful for GROW because it is through their support and care that I have come this far. I came to GROW when I was 9 years old following the civil war. I appreciate the support that the organization has given me and other vulnerable children. May you continue to prosper. May God bless GROW.
I’m a teacher working with 5-year-old children at the GROW NURSERY SCHOOL. I have learned from the professional development opportunities provided for teacher to improve student achievement and best practice. We are following the Ministry of Education Curriculum with supplementary teaching resources from Roots to Fruits. We are thankful for the teaching and learning materials that help us to offer a holistic curriculum.
I teach the baby class of 4 year-old children. I’m fortunate that I have had the opportunity to attend workshops and to work with other early childhood educators, from other districts. We are the first Preschool, in Kobwin subcounty, Tilling village. We work with children from the village, and are thankful for the support from 4GROW.
Thank you for providing water for us. It has helped us concentrate on our learning. Access to clean water has made a difference and we appreciation your friendship and concern.
We are thankful for the financial support we have received from the Canada 4GROW team that has helped improve our livelihoods in the following ways:
distribution of pigs and turkeys
contribution to our Village Saving and Loan Association(VSLA) fund, which has provided easily accessible loans at a low interest for our family projects. It is run by us and there is understanding about our situations based on our needs and contributions
provision of improved cassava cuttings that will improve our yield
baking gifts received during the Christmas season, brought us together and we shared in the celebration
promotion of teamwork, unity and pooling labour to weed our gardens, which has improved our yields.
Creation of Wednesday prayer meeting to support each other and pray for our donors and supporters - these meetings have promoted diligence and accountability to each other
The support we have received has transformed our lives:
our Village Saving and Loan Association (VSLA) fund has been n asset for many of us women, who had no collateral to get money from a bank. It has helped us to send our children to primary, secondary and post-secondary education. Some women received pigs and turkeys.
Joining the group helped us improve our communication. We share our individual financial needs and the group decides based on your needs, savings, and payment history; how much you are loaned, with clear and affordable payment terms and schedule.
The provision of high quality cassava planting materials has encouraged teamwork; we pool our labour to weed our gardens and time and the result can be seen at our spectacular thriving gardens, that stand out in the village.
The peer visits organized by 4GROW for our groups to other districts in Teso region, has been one of the most exciting things I have done in my life. My increased exposure to other villages in other nearby districts was such a highlight for someone like me who had lived only in one village: where I was born and got married. We shared with each other and learned how we have overcome challenges by working together. It was such an inspiration as we made many friends.
Thankful for VSLA that has help us save money to pay tuition for our children to attend school on time.
It has helped us improve our standards of living by addressing personal grooming and etiquette.
It has promoted group work and team building among us.
Making new friends during the peer visits was such a treat.
Thanks to the Canadian team and our facilitators for the excellent cassava project that was introduced to our village. The village Savings Loan Association has helped some of us to open businesses, so that we can access markets that improve our financial well being.
